The Good Samaritan

That's me !!!!

tell you why ...

So here I was standing right out Trinetra Fresh and having soup when this couple drive in with their Zen car. They keep the engine on and get in to make purchase. I was like - Maybe they are going to make quick purchase and be a back in jiffy.

But no! 5 min later they were still making their purchases and the car engine was still on. That is pollution ... Big Time ! Not mention waste of petrol . when i finished my soup and couldn't stand it anymore, I went in and spoke to the guy who drove the car .

" Excuse me , I couldn't help notice but I see you have kept car engine on ... Maybe you should switch it off " .

He dint bat eyelid and smiled and without any fuss , he said " You are right.. Sorry about that . Kept it on because my mom is inside. But I will switch it off" .

And off he went and duly switched off the engine . Meanwhile, I got on my bike and started it when he came in asked , " Hi , are you an environmentalist? studying environmental science?engineer?" ....

I told him - Heck no .. I am not even an environmental activist . But that doesn't mean i cant point it out to you .. right? I hope I dint offend you in anyway.

" Not at all. Good job", he smiled ...

Boy, was i happy or what? My good deed for the , lord.. ain't that swell..

But the incident got me thinking. Big Insights..

  • He was not illiterate. And from the way he spoke , definitely not unaware about climate problems and pollution either. But still he was caught in the act of wasting petrol. why did he do that ? How can we prevent people from wasting petrol and other energy resources in our own small yet significant way?
  • Why did he think that I had to be a environmental science student or a activist or an engineer to point it to him? Why is he waiting for such people to come and tell him straight when he himself can be an environmental evangelist without any tags? Just be a concerned-well informed citizen. How difficult can that be. huh?

But you know what ?

I felt good about what I did. Made me feel responsible and made me feel powerful . As if - I have it in me to make the change - kind felling.

Not exactly the epitome of modesty. Am i ? :-)

But think about it. How many times have you seen such incidents where your friend, relative or just about any stranger waste petrol or cause massive pollution and yet you let it pass without thinking twice about it?

Try to be proactive for a change. See the difference you make for yourself . The sense of empowerment, happiness, success which sweeps over you when you do a good Samaritan act.

So.. I was thinking . Now that i did something good . Did i earn a Bournville?
